Posh Portland

Portland Oregon is the perfect little city and the most desirable city for 25 to 35 year olds to move to! Taking the best from Seattle, Vancouver and San Francisco, this city has more to offer than each one of the others.

You can ski Mount Hood, nearly all year, just 45 minutes away or play golf on a links course beside the sea. Taste phenomenal wine, especially Pinot Noir, all around the outskirts of the city due to a city plan that does not allow for urban sprawl. Travel free on downtown transportation and the final gift to Oregonians and tourists - no sales tax. Add in a beautiful walkable city, tasteful development (no giant high rises), planning for artists in the Pearl District with homes for artists as well as galleries and music, culture and fabulous farmer's markets. Couple this with architecture which gets awards for its eco-innovations, great food and a humming nightlife-it's a perfect place to visit.

The food is both exceptional and interesting. The best meal we had was at Gabriel Rucker's Le Pigeon a small buzzing restaurant where all the tables are shared, a concept that is catching on in several excellent Portland restaurants.  Rucker takes risks in his cooking and you can always be assured of some surprises (try his Duck Breast with Pickled Radish or Honey-Bacon-Apricot Cornbread with Maple Ice-Cream in your kitchen). Other good choices include Park Kitchen where the food is quirky and fun. Try their chick pea French fries for a novel take.

Most of the good Portland restaurants subscribe to fresh, local, organic, sustainable, seasonable or Flossy food as it is called. Flossies are people who believe in these ideals and try to eat in that manner. The term has caught on to the point that I have even seen it in the New Yorker magazine!
